Eisenhower was also the person who warned about the growth of the "military-industrial complex" which did, indeed, become the most hungry and untouchable feature of the national budget -- never audited with any success and the favorite Christmas tree for elected officials to decorate with earmarks.

The interstate highways were another Ike legacy. Having been the Supreme Commander of forces in WW2 he realized the importance of a well-planned national highway system to deploy defensive forces in the event of a foreign invasion. We tend to forget that old-school Republicans didn't hesitate to tackle big national issues.

He was waiting for the moment.

During his two terms in office, President Dwight D. Eisenhower nominated five members for the Supreme Court of the United States: Chief Justice Earl Warren, and Associate Justices John Marshall Harlan II, William Brennan, Charles Evans Whittaker, and Potter Stewart. All were confirmed by the Senate.

That was the court making the Brown decision which led to school desegregation.
