Just your daily reminder that the Republican Party is totally broken and will remain so at least until the day of Donald Trump's death. Probably beyond as well.
The comments yesterday attacking Sen. Lankford were emblematic of your comment. It doesn't matter how conservative you are or what you did in the past - it's all about whether you are in line with Trump or against him. That's the only litmus test right now for most GOP voters.
My brother calls me a RINO and when I ask him what the Republican platform is all I get is "America First." He and most of today's Republicans wouldn't have the first idea who Bill Kristol, Wm Safire, or any of the thinkers of the 80s and 90s. Sigh, so sad.
There hasn't really been a talking filibuster since World War I, no matter what you saw from Jimmy Stewart. You are more likely to see the end of the filibuster.
Had to read this paragraph in today’s edition twice: “I will say this about the measure produced by Senate negotiators - I have covered immigration issues since the mid-1980's, back when we called the people coming across the border 'illegal aliens.' I can honestly say I have never seen such a conservative piece of legislation as this deal. It really is quite striking.”
So, aside from placating 45, what’s the actual GOP game plan here? Just shoot down border legislative solutions and continue to hold press conferences at the border and whine about nothing being done?
The GOP game plan has worked to perfection. The Democrats / Biden have totally botched their response at the border, and look like the fools. Republicans have ginned up a message machine that basically demands the Great Wall of China, moats, alligators, snipers, and more to stop the invasion. The only way the average independent voter gets tired of that view is when the Trump people overreact and start trying to seize millions of people off the streets of America...and then things will swing back.
This turn of events should not be shocking. It is today's GOP in a nutshell. Democratic leaders don't understand that most of their own voters aren't that invested, and would happily go along with building the wall, and other tough measures at the border.
Absolutely as one of those voters. But it is nuts to see this failure to govern. When you first talked of this negotiation, I had wondered if it was a Biden scheme to force GOP's hand. Seems it worked...
At the end of the day, it seems to me that everything the Republicans have done, then it backfired them. The tariffs imposed to China, holding information and testing during the pandemic, the Post Office debacle against mailing ballots, the reverse of Roe v Wade didn't work as well with their voters, the intent to overthrow the elections by force, including the fake electors, McCarthy, the infightings between them. And, rejection of this Immigration Bill will not be the exception, it will, eventually, backfire them, as well.
I think you may be wrong. The other things are actions they took that backfired on them. Their failure to do anything and then complain about the status quo is only plan they have had for up to 20 years that has worked for them.

This is a helluva report card, Jamie. I think it's time to bring back the talking filibuster.

So I've heard. The sooner the better.

Killing a bill so quickly and yet potentially impeaching the DHS secretary. Wow.

So an unelected person
Has veto power
Seems so
UnRepublican!
