I found it interesting that the Trump-Vance campaign is so intent on demonizing the Haitian workers in Vance’s own state that Vance attempted to blatantly lie about their legal status on live TV. And then when the moderator told viewers the truth, Vance got his mic cut while complaining “The rules were you guys weren’t going to fact-check!” He clearly believed he could lie with impunity. Vance is like a Scooby Doo villain in a Brooks Brothers suit.
The moment JD Vance yelled at the debate moderators that we are not having any fact checking - that’s everything you need to know about where we are in this country.
I thought it was a great debate. The civility from both sides was greatly appreciated. Vance is still a snake oil salesman and Waltz as Midwestern Dad. But to me as an average American Waltz was the winner. While Waltz did have a rough start and was not as polished he come on in the end and brought up great points and put Vance on his toes. And Vance totally lost me when he implied that he would not do what Pence did and would back Trump. Considering Trump's bracket record we need someone that will tell Trump the truth and not what he wants to hear. Also very glad I did not make a drinking game or the number of times Vance said I came from a middle class upbringing. Also the number of times he brought up about not being able to pay bills growing up. I would not have made it half way through the debate.
I hope the press praises Vance a lot, because it will enrage Trump, and he'll get even more weird.
And actually, if I were just learning about Vance and the issues, I would think he's a reasonable guy. I do think he's angling to take over MAGA-land either when Trump loses this race or after Trump completes a second term.
Good points, though I hesitate to call Vance "reasonable." My guess is he is more opportunistic than reasonable, clearly willing to flip ideas in a flash to stay in the spotlight.
I'm reminded of a boss I once had who had an instinct to watch a large staff to sense who among them were persuasive leaders given an assignment. When he saw a problem being resolved his reaction was to find the parade and get in front of it to receive maximum recognition for himself.
USS Cole. I flew home from La Maddalena Italy the day she was bombed. I had just visited my spouse in port who was deployed with her strike group. He loved landing over on the Cole because they "always had ice cream". It's heartening to see her at sea and back in the fight.
Debate. The competition for who was more Midwest dad and extra Midwest nice was on full display. I was delightfully bored with the civility we greatly miss when the showman is at the podium. While I was occasionally lost in Walz's rambling answers, at least twice, he did a good job rebutting the idea that the Biden/Harris administration fell short when in fact it was Congress's responsibility to act.
Helene. The USA has a great history of coming together during disasters. The scope of Helene's damage might be one of those 9/12 moments in Congress. I hope.
I'm surprised Biden will be here in Greenville SC today. (No extra E in our Greenville, BTW.) We had it really bad with lots of flooding, 97% of the county without power and SO MANY trees down, often through houses. But it's nothing compared to our neighbors to the north in Asheville NC. Seeing the videos on the local news and on line is stunning. 😓
Thanks for you comments on the debate. Did not watch. Tired of listening the bs. I know how I'm voting. No need to listen. The comments show what I mean. Those that commented had already decided how they were voting. They just want to watch their VP candidate do better than the other guy. Mostly wasted hot air.
Sorry for the late question. Do you think Johnson is reticent on bringing the House back for funding FEMA because of the Freedom Caucus? I they are likely to vote no and have a few words to say about overspending in the face of a crisis, thus giving Dems a talking point.
I don't think they need to come back before the election - but more money will likely be needed in the lame duck session. And yes, your theory will probably prove to be true. I think I saw back in 2017 that 58 House Republicans voted against a package of disaster aid back then.

I don't believe Vance is reasonable. But he comes across that way if you don't know the actual facts.

Thanks for the packed newsletter this morning!

I remember the USS Cole. And that is very interesting to have its involvement.
Thank you for the debate summary. I don't watch these because it's not changing my mind and I find it archaic. Your summary is what I trust.

Vance probably won the debate, but no knockout punches or gaffes. As usual, they make me wish these two were at the top of their respective tickets.
The comments rarely disappoint revealing the cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias on both sides. It’s going heavy one way today.
