$2 billion for hardening schools. There are almost 100,000 public schools in the US. That is 20k per school, or almost enough to pay the architect fees. Now don’t get me started on how much we really need for real mental health.

You know schools very well, Dave. "Hardening" all of them would be impossible.

Mental health is not only important for kids - but for all adults as well. That would be its own giant health reform issue.

This clause jumps off the screen for me:

"...gives Democrats in Congress a major accomplishment to talk about back home during an election year."

Words fail me.

That is important, of course, but in the face of America's firearms affair it is more symbolic than real. Together with the Supreme Court decision, that gesture strikes me as moving one step forward and two steps back.

Yes, you may be right about the real-world effect of this compromise bill. But getting something done can also lay the groundwork for getting something done in the future. Even tweaking the instant check system can be an effective response.

Can you get a pardon without a conviction first? Or even an accusation of a crime?

The best thing that could be done for mental health would be the elimination of the Certificate of Need requirement. And it would not cost the government a dime.

We’ll never see a vote like the Muse of History again. Congress abdicated war powers a long time ago. 😡
