Amazing that they got to this point without a shutdown. The suspension of rules usage, gaetz trying to speak, magic minute, dude alarm...what a day! Thank you for capturing all of it!
I find it refreshing to see some bipartisanship for a change. It shouldn't be so rate, especially when, with the current makeup of Congress, it's dictated by simple math.
So in the end they approved essentially the same deal they had made to extend the debt ceiling, and we get to do it all again before Thanksgiving. Maybe if they just tried living up their previous deals we could be saved all this drama.
Thanks Steve. I really appreciate the help. I wish I could take my insights on TV, radio, or podcasts to get more attention, but that's not an option right now. So thanks!!
Jamie, do you think changing the fiscal year to correspond with the legislative/electoral calendar might help avoid this madness? It seems to me CRs were not needed for years, but they took off some time in the nineties and the "chicken" game gets worse every time it comes around.
Government shutdowns are like driving drunk and speeding without a seat-belt.
I do think it would help. The shutdown deadlines are arbitrary, and overshadow everything. OTOH, I would like to see Congress do its work instead of taking long breaks
They should set intermediate deadlines, and only take breaks -- short ones -- if they're up to date on the schedule. That's how it works in any other job.
Haven’t heard much from Rep. Massie in reports regarding the budget and shutdown. Is he even a member of this Freedom Caucus? He was one of the nays today, but where does he fit in to all this, now that he is on the rules committee?
Thank you for working overtime for us!
It was a fun day

Thank you Jamie
When recounting the days events, my buddy asked “how do you know these things?”
I told him “Ifollow Jamie Dupree”

And you were worried…
Maybe one day Congress will pass a law that takes away the pay of members of Congress during a shutdown. We can only hope
That's unconstitutional and is not allowed
Ok. I thought they could not pass the law for themselves but could pass pay to bind future legislators
That's right. Only in the future
