ABC News ran an intriguing piece of tape last night. A reporter (presumably Rachel Scott) fired a question at McCarthy after the doomed vote. He referenced some unexpected flips. This morning in Regular Order I see MTG was one of them. I thought she and the speaker were besties. He’s throwing her DC fundraisers these days. This just gets more and more bizarre.

I was going to ask why you say Tuberville is "demanding that Democrats force votes". My thoughts being both Republicans and Democrats want these promotions to happen. But then I saw Rubio's asinine comment ( "The Biden Administration needs to rollback its radical policy of using our military to fund abortions.") Like, dude, the military isn't "funding abortions." It's ensuring service members don't bear the cost of care needed but not available locally. Soldiers at Ft. Huachuca, AZ are driven to the big hospital at Ft. Bliss, TX when needed. I drove the shuttle a few times. The reason for the care does not matter. Also, since I'm a reasoning person, I just talked myself into changing my mind about members undergoing gender reassignment therapy. It doesn't matter if the procedures are voluntary or necessary. I mean, we had an officer elect to undergo voluntary surgery that kept him from deploying to the first Gulf War.

My take.

The right flank wants both a shutdown and an impeachment but they want the latter more. Because they hold the power, because of the slim R majority in the House, McCarthy has to appease them or lose his job.

McCarthy knows that a shutdown could hurt Republicans in 24 and his attempt to get a bigger majority to reduce the power of the right flank. The right flank knows this so they are good with hurting republicans in 2024 to keep the small majority thus their power.

But the main reason they want the shutdown is media attention. That is the most important thing to the loud ones on both the right and left. This is why they are loud in public. The right flank also knows that a prolonged shutdown could hurt them so they will gnash their teeth but will capitulate before it gets too bad as long as the impeachment inquiry goes forth.

But I don't really think the right flank wants and impeachment. Sure they will take it if it looks decent but they really just want the appearance that they did all they could so they can get re-elected.

None of what we are seeing has anything to do with the good of the country and it very rarely does no matter who is in power. Political power trumps all.

The muse of history quote about unemployment prompted me to look up the 1965 levels. The breakdown of categories I found didn't feel like a problem to me. The previous year was higher, but it has one down in 1965. Good reminder of the spin I guess.

I took the summer off. I’m not working at all this weekend.

Oh, wait… I’m retired and no one is expecting me to keep the government running.

What’s the GQP excuse? You’d think at least the deranged ones would stay in town and fight for heir idiot ideas. They are still being paid, right?

Ok, I’m just gonna ask again. Why aren’t 6 (or 12 or 20) dem house members going to McCarthy and tell him to put together a reasonable budget that the senate will pass, and they’ll vote for it?

They can throw in that if the radical right wing terrorists that just want impeachment and for INMATE #PO1135809 to not be prosecuted, they’ll vote for him for speaker if those asses try to oust him.

Why is it that when republicans have the minority in the Senate, they still can control what gets voted on and what doesn’t… and what gets stopped cold. Even a single ass like TT has a hell of a lot of power, but we never see that when the dems have the minority.

"Again - this is the same majority that Pelosi had, and she passed all sorts of major legislation that became law. McCarthy right now is struggling to get his party to keep the government open." - that's the difference between competence and incompetence. Mr. McCarthy is a loser. He seems to be the only one who doesn't understand this.

I am not sure how changing the fiscal date will matter. The main issue that I see is that no one makes it a priority months in advance. Maybe if they knew they would be stuck in DC during the holidays it would give them an incentive. But it would also allow Congressmen that lost their reelection to still have a vote.
