Thank you Mr. Dupree for drilling down on this about the MSG rally — from “Dixie” to the speakers to the jokes, it was all PLANNED by the campaign. That PR joke and the other comments from the other racist misogynistic speakers (including Tucker Carlson) were all on the agenda. The only exception was when 45 inevitably wandered from his remarks on the prompter.
Given 45’s own comment about Johnson at the rally, it appears the campaign is just firing up the worst people in the base for another Jan. 6 and Trump expects to regain power without necessarily the aid of the electoral college. We literally have people setting fire to ballot boxes already. I fear we should all brace ourselves. These people are telling us who they are and what their plans are. We need to listen.
45's comment to Johnson is proving out what I assumed to be true. He is not trying to get more votes because he doesn't plan to "win" based on who gets the most votes. He plans to finish what they started on Jan 6th (led by Johnson) and that's taking the election based on procedures (which most people are ignorant of because we have never had to understand the process). It's the same thing that's happening with the GA elections board and others around the country. This doesn't even include the buring of ballot boxes and mailboxes in what, 3 states now. Their real plan, create just enough chaos that they can sow "plausible doubt" too throw out the earned electors and leave the decision with the GOP lead House. And with their willing partners in the SCOTUS, this all feels like a setup. That's why the GOP can't win the presidency or the House in this election. Their willingness to do "whatever it takes to save the country" knows to limits. I am not a conspiracy threorist (I know that's what all conspiracy theorist say) but this is all feeling like a well coordinated effort in plain sight. Stacey Abrams said it best, "Democracy dies in the details".
As for why the PR insult is resonating when others haven't (as much): Puerto Ricans are Americans. Previous targets are perceived as "others", even if naturalized.
Others have spoken enough about”the joke”, so let me address the Post.
Amazon is convenient when im in isolated nothern Michigan, but i planned to drop prime already. Don’t listen to Am music much, or watch Prime video enough to warrant the extra $$.
But, I cancelled my Post sub for this reason…i pay for credibility. If Bezos puts his thumb on the editorial side, what else has he meddled in? Has he secretly quashed stories critical of Trump?
Yes, there are great reporters there whom I support and would support with my $$ (like Dupree). But this action raises doubts about how decisions are made at the top and what other business considerations affected that decision (Blue Origin). Katharine Graham he ain’t. So i will take my dollars elsewhere
Behold! Most of the targets Trump and his followers insult are either amorphous blobs: "Communists", "Pedophiles" - groups to which few people self-identify - or non-voting groups, such as illegal immigrants.
You hit the nail on the head there. I stop listening as soon as someone starts denigrating the “media’ or “government”, as if there aren’t millions of individual entities making up the entirety of those bodies. The media bashers are a particularly ridiculous lot, as most of the time they are throwing their stones from behind keyboards on social media - thus making them a part of the very thing for which they have their misguided disdain. It’s absurd and so, so stupid.
Hi Jamie! My 2 cents about the PR backlash: As a Colombian American living in NE FL for 30+ years I can tell you one group that you should NEVER insult their heritage or homeland are: 🇵🇷PUERTO RICANS! In general they are a proud bunch who adore their own culture and are oozing with pride about it (rightfully so but don’t tell them I said that, I got a rep to protect 🇨🇴😉 jk!)
Among Latin Americans living in the US there is often harmless banter poking fun at our own and each other’s cultures kinda like siblings/cousins but that’s bc there is a common language and relatable history and similar shoes walked in through our lives/generations, but the MSG jokes came from a stage by a campaign who has done everything they can to vilify and insult everyone who isn’t a white straight married with kids Christian American especially Latinos and immigrants and then proceed to gaslight the media and American people about it. So to have some random comedian add more fuel to that fire of toxic racist tactics while the comedian is left to try to defend himself with “it was just a joke! I love PR and vacation there!”that just makes it worse. That tells me he learned nothing about the history or struggles of PR while “vacationing”there. Also extra stupid points for making that joke in NYC! Unfortunately, the Trump camp just used that comedian to make a headline? pump up their base? distract? who knows and are now discarding him, but I digress.
Another reason Puerto Ricans are not a group to mess with is bc a bunch of them serve/have served in the military! Every Puerto Rican I’ve known was either in the navy or married to or a child of someone in the navy. So they are EXTRA patriotic and proud and pissed off that they keep getting treated like garbage and dismissed over and over again.
Puerto Ricans on the island cannot Vite for president, but so many of them have to leave the island for work and opportunity so they end up in the mainland where they can vote!
So all the aforementioned tells me no one on TFG’s team actually knows a Puerto Rican or if they do and they saw that material coming down the pipeline, then they may have a mole in their camp looking to take Trump down strategically from the inside. Because what are the chances that AOC was chatting with Tim Walz live and Harris was in a PR restaurant at the exact moment when those jokes were being delivered?!?! Inquiring minds want to know 🤔
A Puertorrican here, I would like to remind people or to those who don't know that in 2019 the people of Puerto Rico forced their Governor to resign. He was ousted with the chants of pots and pans. Just saying...
You make an important point when you point to "harmless banter poking fun at our own and each other’s cultures kinda like siblings/cousins but that’s bc there is a common language and relatable history and similar shoes walked in through our lives/generations..."
America has a long history of various groups poking fun at themselves, but when others pick up the same tropes, hurling them back as insults, the intent is insulting, malevolent to the core. When black people use the N-word it can carry a range of unspoken messages from insulting to humorous to mildly descriptive, but that is a word best left alone for those not in the club.
I'm old enough to remember when minstrel shows were popular entertainment for white crowds including civic clubs and high schools, and the generation before me found blackface routines ordinary and acceptable.
Those days nay be gone but the same ignorant, hateful impulses that drove them are very much alive and well. And those tossing them aside as "just joking" are fooling no one but themselves.
To that point, I like to share this video of Ta-nehisi Coates. His response to a question on how words are used within and outside of a group have different meaning. https://youtu.be/QO15S3WC9pg?si=onnr3QFdTKKJ5nt7
I’m not alone in saying that the 1939 Nazi rally at MSG was on my mind from the moment the location was announced. Despite all the evidence contrary, I held out hope that this rally wouldn’t be full of the “America is terrible” and “people (everyone but us) are terrible” garbage.
So when the racism started coming out, I think it was a “boiling over” type of moment.
(To be clear, I’m not calling any of them a Nazi or such.)
Interestingly, I haven’t seen any of my conservative friends mention anything about it. Usually they come out on the defensive to explain it away or such. But it’s been mum.
Because NY is a huge PR diaspora, and Puerto Ricans on the mainland can vote. He's used to bullying noncitizens with little to no recourse, that's not the case here. It's an educated population that knows those comments weren't casual, if they were up on a teleprompter, it means that they were vetted by the campaign. They also made that joke on Staten Island which is a literal trash island, which would offend anyone from PR. He just happened to pick on a population that is very unified and not at all scared of him.
It was October 7th 2016 that the “Access Hollywood” tape was leaked and Trump still won that race.
I have two theories on why Trump is acting the way he is acting. 1 he thinks he is going to win so he can do and say whatever he wants or 2 he thinks he is going to lose and can use his performance during this election to have his lawyers clam he is mentally unstable and can not aid in his own defense.
The choice of playing Dixie as Byron Donalds' walk up music was purposeful and let's us know what the GOP thinks of their Black constituents. But it speaks more to Donalds, Tim Scott, Vernon Jones and the rest of their ilk to be willing to accept the disrespect and "know their place". I don't feel sorry for them but I do feel sorry for the embarrassment that their families, especially their parents and grandparent (who likely had to pay poll taxes up until the early 1960's to vote) have to endure watching their legacy willingly be the punchline of some racist gag while they get on stage and step and fetch, all while spouting white supremacist talking points. I guess they figure "it's better to be at the right hand of the devil, than to be in his path of destruction". What they don't realize is that they are not the right hand, but the overworn doormat which is easily thrown out and replaced if they step out of line.
I said to my husband once, if we ever run out of money, there was always money in being a Black Conservative willing to be the voice of white supremecy. We both agreed we would rather go back to frank 'n beans.
Yup. As a Black women, what stuck out to me was the comment about Blacks carving watermelons for Halloween when pointing out Black person at the rally. I wonder if that person laughed along with the crowd while awkwardly being patted on the back and being told they were "one of the good ones"? But with the sheer volume, who can keep up. I guess I should just do what JD said in response to the jokes and "take a chill pill".
It’s because the news media made it so. They are looking for anything new with which to attack Trump. That comedian is known for those type of comments. That he was at the rally and allowed to speak is really the unforced error.
We've all heard about WaPo and LA Times non-endorsements but has the AJC made any move to endorse anybody ? They used to publish a full slate of endorsements; local, state and federal. I guess they lost their soul a long time ago.
It’s a sad statement on the modern GOP: the party’s racism is so deeply entrenched, so endlessly sprawling, that even artificial intelligence buckles under the task of cataloging it all.
There were so many other offensive thing said FROM THE BEGINNING by the guy himself and THIS is what gives people pause? Since this insanity did
ensue, dare I say many of us suffer from PTSD from the years of verbal and political abuse. And the media either/both sides it and that's misdirected (purposefully?)
He should never have won the first (and only) time. The majority of us have never wanted such a person.

Bingo! You got it.
(Edit: I have a first edition of "Eight Years in Power." Coates is amazing.)
Underscoring the point, here is a current example of entertainment with a deadly serious message.

Wasn't there another joke about Hispanic sexual habits? It seemed even more off color than the garbage patch "joke".

That Muse of History is something….
If you have a few minutes, link to the actual speech and read it
Will do.

Brit Hume says it best: https://x.com/brithume/status/1851242383926567045?s=46&t=QOv-7jgKwBhq9DQJqpAeeA
Updated from Brit Hume: it was Ari Fleischer who said this - not Brit Hume.
Trump has immunized himself to the point that his shocking statements are normal and thus no longer generate backlash.
We've all heard about WaPo and LA Times non-endorsements but has the AJC made any move to endorse anybody ? They used to publish a full slate of endorsements; local, state and federal. I guess they lost their soul a long time ago.
