Sounds like there would be bipartisan support for a national IVF law. Wait - I'm sorry - Republicans and Mike Johnson control the House. There will be no legislation. Silly me.
Yesterday's NY Times cites the reasoning leading to that nutty Alabama ruling about In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
➤ The majority, in its opinion, cited a 1872 statute that allows parents to sue over the wrongful death of a child and found that “unborn children,” including “extrauterine children,” were included in that.
I'm not an expert but my guess is that the term was a Nineteenth century neologism for unborn babies still inside the mother.
“one of their main story lines now looks like it was straight up Russian disinformation”
If you read any garbage right wing social media (it’s a fun hobby for me), you’d see that these morons are twisting in every possible pretzel shape to explain how even without witnesses or evidence Biden is THE MOST CORRUPT president in the history of all history.
Because that what trump says, and you never ever contradict your fuhrer.
This was a great read today Jamie. I saw it was a non-paywall one, so I hope it gets you more subscribers. Your coverage has been fantastic and differentiating.
I had been wondering if MTG had to pony up on fines for not wearing her mask on the floor of the house. Your comments earlier this week alone were worth the modest cost of my subscription.
Thank you for your informed reporting. As a reality check, I read your newsletter every day before I read anything else.
When I saw that cyrillic word coming I got ready to consult Mr. Google to figure out what it meant, but the text-to-audio feature I use said "falsities" without missing a beat. I have no idea if that was phonetic or translation but I suspect it was a translation.
My dad is very anti-abortion, but even he is dismayed about what's been happening with reproductive rights. He was very sympathetic to the women who had to leave Texas to get the life-saving care they needed, and this IVF thing is incomprehensible. Like, do frozen embryos inherit? Does the next woman willing to carry them to term (on the off chance any given embryo is viable) get the money? Or does someone get forced to carry them to term? What about selective reduction, where a few of several implanted embryos are aborted in order to increase the odds that any of them survive? He's getting close to voting for Biden in the general election instead of just not voting in the presidential race. And that's saying something. Personally, if I could get him to not vote for Allred instead of Cruz, I'd consider that a serious triumph.
As a pro-lifer, the Alabama SC ruling gave me some pause. Through the IVF process, yes some fertilized eggs are damaged. But it is outside the womb.
In general, I’m against this ruling because this isn’t the same as an abortion. Maybe something about the procedure needs to change/improve, but that would take time to learn & discern. Two aspects that politics doesn’t encourage. Especially the populace.

Thank you for the unlinked article. I hadn't read about that specific word. Very odd since I would expect intrauterine.

Thanks for making me try to remember Russian. I could pronounce it but forgot what it meant! As we say across the Chattahoochee, Bama gonna Bama. Ugh
Trivia here.

The best way I know to pronounce it is falshiviye. The e being a soft e. Been 30 years. Trust it at your own expense!😂

Let’s not even bring up how much Alabama treasures the sanctity of human life, so much so they refuse to proceed with the killing of death row inmates...oh wait, looks like they’re full steam ahead AND getting creative about it. Such hypocrisy 😑 https://apnews.com/article/nitrogen-execution-death-penalty-alabama-699896815486f019f804a8afb7032900
