President Joe Biden announced on Sunday that he would not run for reelection in 2024, bowing to growing concerns within his own party that he would not be able to win in November.
"I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” Biden said in a tweet sent on Sunday afternoon.
Pressure had built on Biden over the past three weeks after his subpar debate performance in Atlanta on June 28, which triggered calls by Democrats for him to step aside as the Democratic Party nominee.

A few minutes later, Biden offered a full endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” Biden said.
